We study the energetics of Gutzwiller projected BCS states of various symmetries for the triangular lattice antiferromagnet with a four-particle ring exchange using variational Monte Carlo methods. In a range of parameters the energetically favored state is found to be a projected d x 2 −y 2 paired state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. We show that the properties of this nematic or orientationally ordered paired spin-liquid state as a function of temperature and pressure can account for many of the experiments on organic materials. We also study the ring-exchange model with ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange and find that among the studied ansätze, a projected f-wave state is the most favorable.

Theory of a competitive spin liquid state for weak Mott insulators on the triangular lattice.

We propose a novel quantum spin liquid state that can explain many of the intriguing experimental properties of the low-temperature phase of the organic spin liquid candidate materials κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 and EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2. This state of paired fermionic spinons preserves all symmetries of the system, and it has a gapless excitation spectrum with quadratic bands that touch at momentum k...

Spin Bose - metal phase in a spin - 12 model with ring exchange on a two - leg triangular strip

Recent experiments on triangular lattice organic Mott insulators have found evidence for a two-dimensional 2D spin liquid in close proximity to the metal-insulator transition. A Gutzwiller wave function study of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model with a four-spin ring exchange term appropriate in this regime has found that the projected spinon Fermi sea state has a low variational energy. ...

Novel Pauli-paramagnetic quantum phase in a Mott insulator.

In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion localizes electrons. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a qua...

Spin-orbit physics of j=1/2 Mott insulators on the triangular lattice

The physics of spin-orbital entanglement in effective j = 1/2 Mott insulators, which have been experimentally observed for various 5d transition metal oxides, has sparked an interest in Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) models thought to capture their essential microscopic interactions. Here we argue that the recently synthesized Ba3IrTi2O9 is a prime candidate for a microscopic realization of the triangu...
